Ham's Workout Loop

Posted for no particular reason except this is a nice (mainly) road loop that I enjoy doing as a quick workout. Works well for any Abbey to Abbey location. And remember, all those extra road miles will pay off in the forest!!

It's 19.75km door to door.

What Is The Hardcru?

What is the Epping Hardcru?

The 8 rules of the HardCru

1 - The first rule of the HardCru is, you do not talk about the HardCru.

2 - The second rule of the HardCru is, you DO NOT talk about the HardCru.

3 - If someone says stop, puts a foot down, takes a drink, the rest of the Cru must stop.

4 - One guy to a bike (unless it's a tandem).

5 - One bike at a time (on the singletrack at least).

6 - No helmet, no ride.

7 - Rides will go on as long as there are people still riding.

8 - If this is your first ride with the HardCru, you have to stack.

Southern XC Round 3 - Crow Hill, New Forest - Race Report

After a mega dose of food poisoning two weeks ago, It was a less than confident matty that hot footed it down the M3 at 8am on a hot and sunny morning.

The period of hot and dry weather in the preceeding week meant fast and dusty conditions in the New Forest.

Dorset rough riders had put together a good 5 mile course, unrelenting and fast, mostly technical singletrack with a few sharp climbs, on a mixture of loamy and sandy soil - (a factor which saw many riders crashing as grip was at a minimum )- and utilizing three wooded enclosures on the slopes of crow hill to make three distinct sections of the course.

Name That Singletrack Competition

OK competition time -for new EHC members only (i.e. not Kev/Paul/Mark/Matt C) -a prize (no, there is one really!) to the person with the most points.

Give the reason why the following sections of singletrack are named as they are -some are blindingly obvious, others are completely cryptic. Fractions of the points shown may also be awarded if you get part of the reason -i.e. some have a double reason (Green Blade Rising springs to mind), so full points for getting both elements, half points for getting one of the reasons.

When Animals Attack

When Animals Attack

One week ago, a mountain biker on Theydon Ridge fought off a crazed grey Squirrel that repeatedly charged him until a brave companion drove the animal off with hazeluts.

The rider, who wishes to remain anonymous for fear of retribution, says he escaped his encounter only through the bravery and foresight of his companion rider. Suffering dirt marks from the squirrels claws on his forearm, a punctured tyre and a dented rim, he says he hopes others learn from the mistakes he made.
Our tips are try to avoid surprising wildlife, always ride with another and always carry hazelnuts. Don't make eye contact, and back away slowly - NEVER RUN!! Brazil nuts are also reported to work, if hazelnuts are not available.

Gorrick Enduro - A Stragglers Tale

Well it's the day after and I'm very very very sore!! So sore infact that I am having to type this report standing up!!

Pre-race: I was up and at 'em by 6am - car packed, drinks made up, energy gels and bars a plenty. Setting out early I was apprehensive and excited so many scenarios had been running through my head during the days leading up to it and now here I was, on my way! Come 7am I had arrived, no signs, no people!! It seems the organisers had decided to have a bit of a lie-in today.

Ride Reports : EHC Goes Nuts!

EHC Goes Nuts!

After much to-ing anfd fro-ing, Mark, Paul and I finally got out this afternoon.

somehow we managed to do the best part of 10 miles, despite not really seeming to ride much.

We did The Nutcracker, into the Wedge, up Root Canal and then accross to the FR. Across the loughton road and into Swoopy Hollow. On reaching the drop off/bowl, we decided to have a play - taking numerous new lines into the bowl, the highlight being mark's last jump - its was sick!

Riding the EHC Way

Riding the EHC Way

The HardCru are a collective of like-minded mountain bike riders, linked by our love of mountain biking, good company and most importantly -having a laugh. We try to ride at least twice a week come rain or shine, all seasons.

The best way to experience the forest is to get off the main bridleways and fireroads. Just look out for the tell tale signs of tyre marks heading off down a singletrack path between the trees, and see where you end up.
