Time Trialing - It’s Still Biking, Honest!

Having caught the Time Trialing bug this year as another great way of improving fitness, and also as a means of meeting other cycling enthusiasts (it’s not THAT dark on the Dark Side after all), I thought I’d post up some of the popular courses used locally.

Matts' SPAM winter challenge 2007 report
SPAM Winter Challenge 2007 - Matt's Perspective

After the recent persistent rainy and mild weather, mud and more mud was the prediction for conditions at this years winter challenge... the event website even had an update advising riders to fit mud specific skinny tyres!!

The course for the 50k had also lost a section due to "unforeseen cir(edited)stances" - bringing the distance for the longest ride down to just 40k - though i dont think many folk were complaining given the tough conditions....

SPAM Winter Challenge 2007 - Ham's Perspective

Woke with a start at 5am Sunday morning having just had a dream that Giles had sent me a text message saying 'Don't Do It!'. Sage advise as ever from Giles!!

I arrived at Matt's at the appointed (ungodly) hour of 6.30am and after a load up of the van, a quick coffee and toast, we were off. Good time was made despite some dodgy headlights - with Matt's voodoo dance miraculously solving the problem (he ran round the van twice mouthing an incantation and the lights came back on!!). As dawn broke the bleak grey skies and light
rain that greeted us were a sign of things to come. Past Stonehenge and crossing the Plain, disaster struck!!

Cross Training/Core Stability To Improve All Round Riding

Disclaimer - Just a short article to share my perspective - I am not a qualified trainer or coach - and would always recommend a qualified trainer to show you how to perform a strength/flexibility program, ok?

For those competitive cyclists out there used to training hard, winter can be a difficult time - poor weather, less racing and the overwhelming consensus by training pundits that the athlete should be easing off the hard work till the new year...

And You Thought We Had Problems With Dog Walkers........

I came across this via Singletraction, from my neck of the woods (or more accurately, my neck of the moors!). Originally I was just going to start a thread, but my thread turned into an essay!

There are a lot of posts/comments, but it's worth reading them just to get really wound up by some of over the top anti MTB posts made by walkers

The original article and posts

and the follow up

Spinning - The Secret Weapon
Spinning - the Secret Weapon!!

Wanna get fit for next summer? Then open your mind, ignore the sarcastic comments of yer riding buddies and consider trying a spin class... two sessions a week will really boost your off road fitness. Incorporate with some longer steady rides and some Mtbing and you'll be leaving those same mates for dead on the hills, the flats and the descents!!

Epping Hardcru – North York Moors 2006

Day 1

Friday 13th October – 8.45, Waltham Abbey – the Pikey Van is loaded – full to the brim with bikes, armour and other bike related bits – and of course – beer! Chugging along at a constant 60mph (on the flat bits at least), we’re making good time up the A1 – destination? The North Yorkshire Moors.

Shedding Some Light
Guides
Shedding Some Light

[Disclaimer -the following is purely the author's own thoughts and ideas, gleamed from experience and a variety of crap picked up from the internet and magazines -it may be all untrue]

It's that time of year again -darkness has engulfed the forest by the time you leave work-the result? You either sit at home getting fat, watching another mind numbing soap or you get out, buy some lights and hit the forest at night!

Go online and look at the selection of lights available -confusing isn't it? -different bulbs, various batteries, beam patterns, handlebar or helmet mount, burn times etc

Hopefully by the time you've read this, you may be a little wiser and know what light set-up suits your needs.

Probably the Cru's other main riding location after Epping -situated about an hour's drive away from Epping, it makes for a pleasant change from the mud which Epping offers mid winter.
