Spinning - the Secret Weapon!!
Wanna get fit for next summer? Then open your mind, ignore the sarcastic comments of yer riding buddies and consider trying a spin class... two sessions a week will really boost your off road fitness. Incorporate with some longer steady rides and some Mtbing and you'll be leaving those same mates for dead on the hills, the flats and the descents!!
So what is spinning? Well for a start it is a registered trade mark of the Schwinn bicycle company, but is now used as a synonymous term for all studio based cycle workouts. Schwinn claim their spinning classes are taught by over 20,000 certified instructors, in 5000 clubs in 100 countries around the world.
According to "Jonny G" - the "face behind the Schwinn spinning program".... "The Schwinn Spinning program allows people of all ages and fitness levels to take a stationary bike and transform it into a powerful workout. Indoor cycling classes allow participants to experience road cycling without all the associated dangers. The program is also a great choice for the cyclist who wants to take his/her outdoor program inside during inclement weather."
Participants are of varied ability. The cycling enthusiasts will turn up with heart rate monitors, cycling shorts and spin shoes, while others simply turn up in shorts, T-shirt and trainers. spinning classes work well with different ability levels, because no one in the class knows how much resistance another person is using. This is because the resistance level is controlled by a discreet knob, or lever, controlled by the participant. so the less fit can use less resistance, the more fit greater resistance and no one will know unless you tell them!!
What does it involve then? Take an air conditioned studio, a big super wall mounted fan, pumping music, a spin instructor, 10 - 20 static fixed gear spin bikes and a bunch of keen participants and you have the makings of a spin class. lasting from 30min up to an hour, the instructor will sit facing the riders, and after a 10min warm up the session will begin in earnest - a good instructor will encourage the use of imagination and visualisation - for example climbing an alpine pass, followed by a sprint for the king of the mountain points at the top, followed by spinning out on the way down the other side - or maybe a time trial around the streets of paris!! This whole imaginary trip will be built around some formal interval training drills and sections of pedalling in time to the music. expect to see extremely high heart rates and to feel the lactic acid burning in your legs and arms!!
Pretty much all gyms run spinning classes, and gym members have access to the spin bikes and studios at all times. I often put in a few hours on the spin bike on my own.... fixed gears, no traffic, dry, air-con and a big fan - switch on my ipod and away i go!!
Avoid spin classes with instructors that don't believe/don't have access to fans - an hours spinning in a hot studio can be dangerous if you overheat - as any instructor worth their salt will know... drink plenty of water, and take a towel to mop up the sweat!!

Thanks Matt, sounds like a good idea. It would be nice to think your ability to blast up a near vertical hill at high speed is down to training not natural ability! So I'm going to give it a go (though I suspect a lifetime of spinning is still going to leave me trailing a long way down in your wake)
