What is the Epping Hardcru?

The 8 rules of the HardCru

1 - The first rule of the HardCru is, you do not talk about the HardCru.

2 - The second rule of the HardCru is, you DO NOT talk about the HardCru.

3 - If someone says stop, puts a foot down, takes a drink, the rest of the Cru must stop.

4 - One guy to a bike (unless it's a tandem).

5 - One bike at a time (on the singletrack at least).

6 - No helmet, no ride.

7 - Rides will go on as long as there are people still riding.

8 - If this is your first ride with the HardCru, you have to stack.

The HardCru started life as 5 friends who all mountain biked (see History for the full detail) -a collective if you like. We are 5 individuals, all connected by mountain biking -we all have very different jobs, backgrounds, and fitness levels.

Initially the mini Cru started out as 3, aiming to get fit, but grew into something bigger as close friends were introduced -skills levels grew as the Cru grew and mountain biking for fun was introduced to those more accustomed to head down, arse up racing.

Then it dawned on us -why not spread the Cru vibe out amongst others, expand the collective of riders!!!!..

None of us have ever really been attracted to joining mountain bike clubs, the rigidity of meeting at a set time and place every week, following the leader round a pre-prescribed route and back home, just seemed a little…… sterile? We have always been informal, turning up to ride if available, often only 2 people meeting up, sometimes 2 groups meeting up at different times. This is the way of the Cru -no-one is expected to ride, no-one is held in disregard if they don't ride for a few weeks (jobs and family commitments can have this effect!). Routes tend to be cobbled together as we ride; trail conditions and what sections people fancy dictating where the Cru rides. Yes, one member of the Cru does know the forest better than the others, but he certainly doesn't lead, more often seen bringing up the rear.

The website was launched and acts as an information point -articles to read, pictures to browse and the forum - a portal to ask questions about cycling in the forest -be it where the best singletrack is or what bits of fireroad are suitable to take the kids along, and more importantly, to organise rides.

The main body of the Cru tend to ride twice a week -once on a weekend and one mid-week/nightride a week. As the Cru collective grows, it is hoped that a number of rides will be organised between Cru members on any given weekend.

Some points:

a) The Hardcru is not a club -we are in no way affiliated to British Cycling (at present!), as such we do not charge any sort of fee.
b) Rides organised by the Cru are informal affairs -the intention is not to have a mass group of 30 people tearing up the singletrack at 1 time, more that the forum will be used as a database of like minded people who may wish to partake in a ride and meet up with other members of the Cru.
c) If you join the main body of the Cru for a ride, please note that the route will be 90% singletrack, lasting around 3 hours, the pace will be leisurely on the uphills, fast and furious on the downs. Again, hopefully the forum will act as a portal to arrange rides of riders of similar abilities.
d) Although we can't enforce it, we strongly recommend that helmets are worn by all riders. No, it isn't our place to dictate what riders do or don't wear, but we don't want some idiot making a “No Win, No fee” claim against us, so the main body of the Cru will not lead anyone round who isn't wearing a helmet.
e) Age isn't an issue -currently the Cru range from 24 -"a lot older" years old, but there is no reason that shouldn't be expanded -if you can ride a bike then you are welcome to the Cru.
f) Please feel free to refer to yourself as a member of the Cru -the movement needs mass, as more and more people hear about it then the more word spreads around about the collective known as the Epping HardCru. If you enter races currently without a team, then enter under the Epping Hardcru moniker -all publicity is good publicity!
g) Finally -we are not that Hard, honestly! The name originated back in the misspent teenage years of one Cru member and the group he hung around in (big up to the Guiseley HardCru!) -the name was a joke, as the group were totally laid back but appeared scary to onlookers due to a collection of dreadlocks, multi coloured hair, piercings and clothing bearing the names of bizarre sounding indie bands. On moving south, the need to resurrect a Cru was needed and thus the Epping HardCru arose them the ashes of it's northern counterpart.
