When Animals Attack
One week ago, a mountain biker on Theydon Ridge fought off a crazed grey Squirrel that repeatedly charged him until a brave companion drove the animal off with hazeluts.
The rider, who wishes to remain anonymous for fear of retribution, says he escaped his encounter only through the bravery and foresight of his companion rider. Suffering dirt marks from the squirrels claws on his forearm, a punctured tyre and a dented rim, he says he hopes others learn from the mistakes he made.
Our tips are try to avoid surprising wildlife, always ride with another and always carry hazelnuts. Don't make eye contact, and back away slowly - NEVER RUN!! Brazil nuts are also reported to work, if hazelnuts are not available.
He says he employed none of these precautions, but was fortunate, because a companion was prepared and drove the animal away with his own emergency supply of nuts.
This encounter is the latest in a chain of unprovoked attacks on mountainbikers in Epping forest over the last few months, and not all have been so lucky.
In September, a lone nightrider, while stopped in the forest to fix a puncture, was cornered and mugged by a rogue gang of foxes. She had her mobile phone stolen after being bitten on the ankle, and was then warned to "stay out of the forest or else".
Our resident "when animals attack" expert advises that aside from never riding alone at night, wearing a bright red jacket and periodically blowing a hunting horn is a simple way to avoid a repeat of this attack.
In October, another lone nightrider was held at gunpoint by a masked Badger.
The Badger damanded cash and valuables in an Essex accent, before riding off in the direction of Loughton camp on the riders mountain bike.
Described as big and hairy, with a bright orange wig and a wooden leg, local police urge any members of the public who think they may know the suspect to contact them in strictest confidence.
and finally, in December, another lone rider was "happy slapped" by a group of hooded fawns on chingford plain - the perpetrators recorded the attack on their mobile phones, before running off in the direction of high beech.
The rider suffered minor cuts and bruises, a buckled wheel and a snapped bar end.
our experts says.." Mountain biking can be dangerous in its own right. Always take precautions on your rides - let someone know where you are going, and when you expect to return. take a mobile phone with you for unforseen circumstances, spare tubes and tools. At night, always use bright and powerful lights with plenty of battery life and always ride with others - wear the right protective equipment and a helmet. Make sure your bike is well maintained and all the components are working - especially the brakes!"
If your bike is sorted, it means you only have to worry about the local wildlife...
"therefore avoid speaking to animals you don't know - especially if they flag you over or appear to be acting suspiciously - and finally - animals have keen senses, especially of smell. If you attempt to ride something dangerous, and as a consequence crash and injure yourself - you will be at the mercy of the forest inhabitants - so my advice is to ride cautiously and don't play into the furry f****rs hands "
